Why concrete?
Concrete countertops are the most unique, personal countertop option because they are made from scratch for each client. To determine whether concrete is right for you, think about whether you believe that:
• You want something unique and personalized
• You want something that looks natural and has character
• You appreciate high-quality, hand-crafted items
• Granite is too shiny, too formal, too common
• Synthetic solid surface materials look and feel like plastic
• You need a color or visual texture that's not available with other countertop materials
If so, concrete countertops may be right for you.
Accepts inserts and inlays
Concrete countertops can be personalized with unique embedded items such as pebbles, recycled glass, precious stones, geodes, amethysts, metal sculpture, etc.
Endless edge details
Using special countertop edge forms, it's possible to create custom edge details, such as the unique chisel edge.
Unlimited color
While all countertop materials have a wide array of color options, only concrete gives you the ability to completely customize the color. Concrete can be integrally colored, stained or both in a virtually unlimited palette of hues, giving the designer the ability to coordinate or match the countertop with other colors and items in a room. Colors are created in a form of artistry and can’t be duplicated each time creating a one of a kind works of art!
Give it a trivet.
Even concrete countertops are vulnerable to hot pans right off the stove, which can degrade the sealer. Cast-in-place trivets are a handy solution, and they also add decorative interest. Cutting boards, drain boards, soap dishes, towel holders or even custom back splashes can be customized
Flexibility of Form
Curves and angles, thickness or thinness, cantilevers and creative edging: like clay in the hands of a sculptor, the concrete countertop can form to the creative imagination of the designer.
Going Green!
Option to make your countertops with 98% Recycled Polished Glass! Many glass colors available, some glass dipped in real silver, when polished, leaves an iridescent look. Example; green looks like emeralds, red like rubies, gold like topaz, blue like sapphire and mother of pearl. Recycled glass and porcelain can qualify for Architectural LEED Credits. Keeping the eco-friendly philosophy of saving our natural resources.
Local Artistry
Not only is it Leed certifiable to use locally sourced and hand crafted building material, it is appealing to be able to appreciatively cite the name of the artist who made one's kitchen or bath countertops. A Stickley chair, a Dior dress, or a Sculpture by Design countertop reflects a homeowner's appreciation for true craftsmanship.
Countertop Mixes and Sealers
Sculpture by Design offers an array of specialize concrete countertop mixes so we can customize the countertop to fit the client’s needs.
Mixes allow us to make shower panel walls of concrete only 5/8” thick or countertops weighing significantly less. Countertops can be made where the main body of concrete is only ¾ “ thick and edges up to 2” thick and yet maintaining 5000 to 7000 psi. A 37” x 22” bathroom vanity with sink is less then 75 pounds using this technique. These mixes contain ingredients such as polymers, resins, glass reinforced fibers, carbon fiber mesh and other products to maintain the integrity and strength. Installing countertops using this method no longer has such weight restrictions requiring cabinetry to be reinforced to handle the old style of mixes or having six men carry in one countertop.
Sculpture by Design offers several sealer options depending on environment the countertop will be located. Outdoors we have strong UV resistant sealers and for kitchens extremely scratch, stain and heat resistant up to 450 degrees.
Cost
Cost of making our countertops are very reasonable, currently natural, colored concrete or water-based stained concrete is $60 per square foot. Acid staining techniques is $65 per square foot. Recycled glass or aggregate polished concrete is $75 per square foot. The artistry we offer gives the impression of granite, marble, limestone or exotic stone surfaces, which can cost over $100 per sf. at other stores. Our price also includes your option of edge styles unlike other stores that start low and add for every option you add.
Extra cost for sinks, back splashes, trivets, drain boards, inlays, inserts, delivery, installation, plumber, electrician, etc.
While pictures are great they can’t give you the full true look, fine detail, feel, or respect for the artistry that has been created in each countertop. Each countertop has been uniquely created and are sold as “One Of A Kind Works Of Art”. To truly experience you must see for yourself!
